What is Checkers?

Checkers is a turn-based board game where two players compete to capture all opposing pieces or block every legal move. Each side commands twelve pieces across the dark squares of an eight-by-eight grid, advancing diagonally one square at a time until reaching the opponent's back rank. The edition on Burrito Bison runs directly in your web browser with no download or setup required.

Key features

  • Diagonal movement: Standard pieces advance forward one square at a time along dark board squares.
  • Mandatory jumping: Leap over adjacent opposing pieces into an open square to capture them from the board.
  • Multi-jump sequences: Continue jumping with the same piece in a single turn whenever consecutive capture paths remain open.
  • King promotion: Reaching the opposing baseline crowns a piece, unlocking full backward diagonal movement and captures.
  • Built-in assist tools: Use the undo button to reverse a misclick or the hint function to spot valid strategic moves.

How to play

  1. Select your piece color and start a new match against the computer opponent.
  2. Click a piece to highlight valid diagonal destinations on the board.
  3. Click an open dark square to move forward or jump across an adjacent enemy piece to remove it.
  4. Chain multiple jumps in one continuous turn when additional capture squares are available.
  5. Guide pieces to the opposite end of the board to crown them as kings.
  6. Win the match by capturing all opposing pieces or trapping the opponent with no valid moves remaining.

Board rules and king mechanics

The match begins with each player controlling twelve pieces positioned on the three rows of dark squares nearest their side. Regular pieces can only move forward diagonally. When a regular piece reaches the final rank on the opposite side of the board, it becomes a king. Kings gain the ability to move and capture diagonally in both forward and backward directions, making them powerful offensive assets for clearing trapped pieces and controlling open diagonals.

Tips and strategy

  • Control the center squares: Pieces positioned near the central four squares exert influence across multiple diagonal lanes and restrict your opponent's mobility.
  • Keep your back row intact: Leaving pieces on your starting baseline prevents the opponent from crowning kings early in the match.
  • Look for multi-jump chains: Position your pieces to force opponent trades that open paths for double or triple captures.
  • Advance in pairs: Moving pieces forward in supportive clusters ensures that an opposing piece cannot jump without immediately being captured in return.
  • Prioritize king promotion: Rushing a protected piece to the opposing baseline creates a versatile king capable of attacking from any direction.

Questions about Checkers
